Q10000 - ERRMSG: Inappropriate Version Error Message (1.0.0.0)

Symptoms

The following error may occur when attempting to run the PC-ACE Pro32 update program (PCACEUP.EXE) ...

This update is not appropriate for your current PC-ACE Pro32 version (1.0.0.0). Contact your distributor for further assistance. This upgrade procedure will now terminate.

The user may also report that when they attempt to execute PC-ACE Pro32 from their desktop shortcut, the update program is launched instead (and this error message is displayed).

Cause

This error indicates that the PC-ACE Pro32 update program file (PCACEUP.EXE) being downloaded by the user has been inadvertently saved to the filename "c:\winpcace\pcace32.exe", overwriting the main PC-ACE Pro32 executable.

Resolution

IMPORTANT:  The user will need to know the PC-ACE Pro32 version number installed prior to the attempted update in order to perform this recovery. Contact technical support if this version number is not available.

Perform the following steps to resolve the file overwrite problem and apply the PC-ACE Pro32 update. This example assumes a typical single-user PC-ACE Pro32 installation to the "c:" drive.

  1. Use Windows Explorer or a DOS prompt to copy the file "c:\winpcace\pcace32.exe" to "c:\pcaceup.exe".

  2. Windows Explorer - Locate the "c:\winpcace\pcace32.exe" file. Use the "Copy" and "Paste" functions from the "Edit" menu to copy this file to the "c:\" folder. Then use the "Rename" function from the "File" menu to rename the "c:\pcace32.exe" file to "c:\pcaceup.exe".

    ... or ...

DOS Prompt - Open a DOS session window. There are several ways to accomplish this. On most versions of Windows you can click the Windows Start button, select the "Run..." option, enter "command" (without the double-quotes) in the textbox, and press the ENTER key. Once the DOS session window has been opened, type the following command at the DOS prompt:

    copy c:\winpcace\pcace32.exe c:\pcaceup.exe
This command both copies and renames the "c:\winpcace\pcace32.exe" file to "c:\pcaceup.exe".

  3. Run the PC-ACE Pro32 update program using the "forced version" command line option. Click the Windows Start button, select the "Run..." option, and enter the command ...

  4. c:\pcaceup.exe /f=1.62.0.100

... substituting the actual version number of the installation (prior to the attempted update) in place of "1.62.0.100" in this example. Click the "OK" button to execute the update program. You will then be prompted to confirm your intent to override the version number. If this override confirmation screen is not displayed, then the command has been entered incorrectly. In this case, you must exit the update program and try this step again. When the override confirmation screen appears, double-check that the version number displayed on the screen is correct and proceed with the update.

Once the update completes successfully, PC-ACE Pro32 can be executed from the Windows desktop shortcut and should function normally.
